StormSouth is one way to get warnings, never the only one. Keep your phone's Emergency Alerts on, and follow the National Weather Service and local officials.
Alerts
I'm not getting severe weather alerts.
Check these, in order:
- In StormSouth: Settings → Severe Weather Alerts is on.
- In your phone's Settings → Notifications → StormSouth: Allow Notifications is on.
- A Focus or Do Not Disturb mode can silence alerts. On iPhone, turn on Critical Alerts for StormSouth so tornado and other life-threatening warnings sound even then.
- Open StormSouth once. That refreshes your phone's registration with our servers.
Which places do I get alerts for?
Where you are now (when Follow Me is on, or each time you open the app), plus every saved place with alerts turned on. Home always has alerts on.
Can I choose which alerts I get?
Yes. Settings → Severe Weather Alerts lets you pick. The most dangerous warnings, such as Tornado Warnings, are always on.
Follow Me and location
What is Follow Me?
Follow Me sends alerts for wherever you are, even when the app is closed. It needs location access set to Always.
Why does StormSouth ask for location "Always"?
Only for Follow Me. Without it, you still get alerts for your saved places and for where you were the last time you opened the app.
Does Follow Me drain my battery?
Very little. It wakes only when you've moved about 3 km (2 miles), and it keeps only a location rounded to about 1 km.
Follow Me stopped working.
- On iPhone, swiping StormSouth away in the app switcher stops background location until you open the app again. Leave it in the background instead.
- Check your phone's Settings → StormSouth → Location is set to Always.
- Low Power Mode can delay background updates.
Your data
How do I delete my data?
Turn off Settings → Severe Weather Alerts. That deletes your phone's record from our servers straight away. Deleting the app removes everything on your phone; our copy is then deleted after 90 days. For anything else, email privacy@stormsouth.app.
What do you collect?
Very little, and never your name or email. See our Privacy Policy.
The app
How do I add the widget?
Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap + (or Edit → Add Widget), search for StormSouth, choose a size, and tap Add Widget.
Where does the weather come from?
Forecasts, alerts and radar come from the National Weather Service and NOAA, with some data from Open-Meteo. Maps are by Mapbox. Full credits are in the app under Settings → About.
Is StormSouth free?
Yes. Ads keep it free, and alert screens never show ads.
